Q1: Where can I find -insert name- resource?
A: Any and all important links can be found here on the weebly or over on our discord in #links-information !
Q2: What is a Caeli, and do they have magic?
Caeli are a closed species of 'dragon' that live in excavated mountains and hills of the continent Visla, in the world called Dravisdor. The world works on the same physical properties and principles of Earth, therefore there is no magic in Dravisdor. Any in-game shop systems that sound magical exist in a hypothetical dimension outside of Caeli existence.
Q3: Where does the name Draconem Caeli come from?
A: Draconem is the singular latin word for draco, meaning dragon. Caeli is derived from the constellation Caelum, meaning chisel in latin. Though the original name of the constellation was Caelum Scalptorium “the engravers’ chisel”. It is also double play on words based on the latin Caelum, meaning “sky, heaven, or atmosphere”. If you read deeper into the caeli lore and anatomy you will realise the link!
Q4: How do you pronounce Caeli?
A: Technical pronunciation of Caelum is See-Lum. The official pronounciation of Caeli is See-Lee (like the fae) but also accepted is Kay-Lee
Q5: Does the caeli world or island have a name?
A: Yes, it does! The world is called Dravisdor and the continent that Caeli live on is called Visla.
Q6: What is the plural of Caeli?
A: The plural of Caeli is Caeli, although writing Caelis is also acceptable. The use of cae in caeli or caekind is equivalent to the use of man in humankind.
Q7: What is a baby Caeli called?
A: A baby Caeli is called a doot.
Q8: I have a question about names. Are there rules, a special language, or can I just make a name that sounds good?
A: You can literally name your caeli anything you want! The official caeli language would be called Vislan, as canonical Caelis don't speak English because there's no humans there. For obvious roleplay and clarity purposes, we write as though they communicate the way we do.
Q9: Are animals different in Dravisdor than on Earth?
A: Yes, a little. Dravisor has creatures like whales, fish and birds but is not as varied as Earth. Instead biome niches are filled with Dravisdorian creatures like phoenixes, hespioaths and arval, etc. The ecosystems in Dravisdor generally have more plant species than types of fauna. You can find out more about companions here: [Important] The Official Caeli Companion Handbook [under construction]
Q10: Do the different nests live in peace or are they enemies? When they do live in peace, is it possible for members of different nests to interact?
A: Inter-nest relationships can be really complex! However, when everything is simplified in modern-day canon they mostly live in peace. There may be some hard feelings over territory and the new Marsh Nest but despite royal grudges, the average Caeli is able to interact with others peacefully. Most of the interactions that happen across nests are due to caeli jobs or ranks, as shown in the nest documents.
Q11: Can I move my caeli from one nest to another, after I've already applied for a nest rank?
A: Yes, up to a maximum of 2 times. You also lose the old rank your caeli had, and must complete another application in the new nest.
Q12: Can I make NPC family members for my caeli character? (e.g. parents, sibling)
A: Yes, definitely! There are only a couple of restrictions: (1) You may not turn them into a main character, they need to have a relatively minor role. (2) NPC characters will not earn caeli coins in artwork/writing, so please keep that in mind.
Q13: Can I draw or interact with official caeli NPCs, such as Lahrian Foss?
A: Yes, you can draw and interact with official caeli NPCs such as Lahrian, however, at the moment their inclusion does not accrue caeli coins. Also be mindful that the only official caeli NPCs are the Queens and those listed in the Compendium Directory.
Q14: I was wondering if we are allowed to put hair on Caelis that didn't originally have them? Some of the reference sheets (like the aging chart) say that they have hair on their head?
A: Please view the visual traits guide for informative specifics on caeli manes: Caeli Traits and Basics
TLDR: Yes you are allowed to add some untraited hair, with the maximum amount generally looking like a foal's short mane (The hair must be ungroomed and minimal, not appearing like a mohawk, styled or mane). Caelis naturally grow longer hair with age when they have the long mane trait, but otherwise do not have a mane without the trait. If you wish to add some untraited hair, feel free to do so but be sure to check with the mods over on discord in #design-check ! You can also buy an uncommon berry to use on your caeli to give them the proper hair trait but, again, after doing it you'll need to get the approval of the mods over in #design-check!
Q15: Can Caelis have accessories, and if so what are the limits/themes do we need to go by?
A: Any Caeli can choose to accessorize themselves if they wish. There are no restrictions on how many outfits you want to make for your caeli.
However, canon caeli outfits are restricted firstly, by physics (Flying means that they wear has to be light enough to take-off and fly around in) and secondly, by technology. They have limited access to materials and techniques to clothing, so nothing futuristic. (e.g. Plant, bone and leather accessories would be canon materials. Neon, futuristic or plastic would not be canon.) Additionally, accessories are usually based on the nest that they live in:
Sea - light fabric, feathers, shells usually blue, green or yellow.
Star - gems, metals, dark colours with flecks of light colours.
Northern - fur, heavy clothing, usually white, grey or other dull colours.
Marsh - masks, fiber, horns and skulls, dark colours or green interspersed with red colours.
Q16: What is the age range of a Caeli? How old can they get, how old are they when they leave their mother, and when are they mature?
A: It may be more helpful if you view the aging reference here. However, as an additional explanation: Caelis live to about 200 years and a fully grown caeli who has left the nest to start a family would probably be 50-ish years old, though of course they can leave their family earlier. It mostly depends on their personality and story! What might help, is to take a human age and double it for a general translation of caeli aging e.g. a 20 year old human is a 40 year old caeli, developmentally speaking.
Q17: To get different ranks does it require certain applications?
A: There are two types of nest 'ranks'
To get an advanced rank once you've filled the prompt sheet, you apply for an advanced rank to the specifications listed in the nest rank journal.
Q18: Do Caelis have mutations? Or just different traits?
A: Caeli do have traits and mutations. Let me explain the different rarity tiers and how they work:
There are three levels of trait rarities: Common, uncommon and rare. These indicate the normality of a certain trait.
Then there are mutations (also called legendary traits), which are random mutations that happen by chance -not passed down genetically. You cannot get a legendary traits via potions, customs, or love eggs.
TLDR: Trait rarities would be common, uncommon, rare AND then mutations layer on top of that. e.g. bioluminescence, missing wings, albinism.
Q19: I want the caeli world to have _________. Is this canon?
A: All canon information is written down in some form on the caeli weebly page, or in linked in the caeli information index. If the topic you're trying to find is not written down somewhere, please ask the species owner and if there is no information you are free to improvise using the existing world lore. We have a broad guideline on how to be 'lore-friendly' - Stick to what's been written and estimate the rest from there. If it's not mentioned, this often means that the interpretation is up to you and that discrepancies between others' ideas and yours are alright. If in doubt, literally just send a message.
Sadly, the one problem we face is that not all ideas can exist at one time within the 'official lore'. However, this in no way diminishes the way you wish to see it or represent it.
Fanons and AUs are a valuable thing, and we encourage this as long as they are clearly labelled as non-canonical events. Examples of AUs might be; Human-world caeli, Sci-fi e.g. StarTrek caeli, Magical e.g. Hogwarts caeli.
Q20: Can my character be evil?
A: Your character's ambitions and motivations are entirely up to you. However, the group is strictly PG in nature. We expect that your prompt sheets and any public-facing content would be strictly PG. There are equivalent and realistic consequences for obvious murderers, pathological criminals, and evident sociopaths etc. In canon, murder/cannibalism/rape/etc is punishable by death in nests. Thus, canonically breaking the group PG rating would result in removal any character who is caught in the act (Removal from the nest rank system/canonical lore and strike to the member's name). For this reason, we encourage careful consideration if you wish to follow that path. Be sure to follow the Caeli TOS and COC.
TLDR: If your caeli character is excessively violent to others without the consent of others, within the public and canon field, then your caeli will be removed from the nest and canon. It is group preference that these violent actions are kept within your private spaces and do not drag others into them. Feel free to roleplay these violent actions and plotlines in private, or in non-canon NSFW chats! We all welcome a villain, but please keep it consensual!
